Pressure rating is well-defined as the maximum allowable pressure that a flange can withstand at increasing temperatures. According to the specifications such as ANSI/ASME B16.5, there are seven pressure ratings amongst flange i.e. - class 150, class 300, class 400, class 600, class 900, class 1500, and class 2500.Class, #, pressure rating, Lb or Lbs are all interchangeable terms. Which means they all refer to the same or the exact concept of pressure - temperature performance of a flange or in case of other equipment such as valves, fittings, etc.
For example , when two flanges have the same bore size, say about 6 inches , manufactured with the same material suppose grade A105, but the flanges have two different pressure ratings i.e. one flange is class 150 while the other one is 300. In this case the lower rated flange which is class 150 is going to be smaller, lighter, and less robust as compared to the higher rated flange i.e. class 300.
In terms of pressure rating, this means a class 150 flange can withstands a pressure of just 140 psi at a temperature of 600 degrees F° , While a class 300 flange, which is bigger and stronger as compared to class 150 , but with the same bore size is able to withstand a pressure of 570 psi at the same temperature of 600 degrees F°. Lastly, a class 2500 flange of the same size can bear 34 times more pressure as compared to a class 150 rated flange. This means that 2500 lb blind flange dimensions can reach a whopping pressure of 4730 psi at a temperature of 600 F°!
The term flange rating or flange class refers to the maximum pressure that a flange can withstand at increasing temperature intervals. The maximum pressure value here can either be in psi or in bars. Those Flanges that have a higher rating or higher class are stronger as compared to the flanges with lower ratings. This is because higher rated flanges can bear more pressure at increasing temperatures. For instance, a 2500 lb weld neck flange dimensions will be stronger as compared to a 1500 lb flange. And this 2500 lb blind flange dimensions will be able to bear more pressure at increased temperatures.
2500 lb rtj flange dimensions made in different materials will exhibit or demonstrate different pressure-temperature performance even if they have the same rating. For example a 2500 pound flange dimensions manufactured from carbon alloy will exhibit a different set of features or characteristics when compared to the same pressure class dimension flange that has been produced from stainless steel. Generally most flanges are manufactured from carbon steel as well as from various Austenitic Stainless Steel grades.
