The hardness of the medium carbon steel Metric Grade 8.8 can be increased by heat treating them. Heat treating the En 15048 Grade 8.8 leads  to a change in the mechanical fasteners. For instance, the  Class 8.8 Bolts have an increased hardness, ductility, yield strength, and impact resistance.

Heat treated Grade 8.8 Bolt is known to exhibit good tensile strength and perform well in most environments. Therefore these fasteners are found in motors, engines, railroad equipment and processing equipment. One drawback about the 8.8 Bolt Material is their underperformance in extreme temperature environments.

One of the main characteristics of the 8.8 High Tensile Bolts are the galvanised hexagon heads. These heads are either made with zinc or are plated with zinc.
