Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardened nickel-based alloy which has been designed applications that require a higher tensile strength. Typical Uns N07718 Material Properties include  very high yield strength, high tensile strength as well as a high creep rupture properties even at elevated  temperatures, which can rise as high as up to 1300ºF  or 705ºC. The Ams 5662 Material can be seen used in applications involving jet engine and high-speed airframe parts or equipment’s such as buckets and spacers, wheels, and high-temperature bolts and fasteners. Inconel 718 alloy can also be used in industries such as the oil and gas drilling and production due to its high tensile strength and good corrosion resistance to chloride related stress cracking and sulphide related stress cracking. Within these industries the Ams 5663 Material has been used in the manufacture of various parts such as valves, pump shafts and wellhead components.

Alloy 718 Forged Rings must be forged keeping the furnace temperature at a maximum of 2050ºF or 1120ºC. The alloy  should not be soaked for an excessive or long time at this temperature. Uniform reductions throughout forging will prevent the formation of a duplex grain structure in the Ams 5663 Material. Working the alloy at a temperature ranging between  1700 ºF to 1850ºF  or 925 ºC  to 1010ºC will improve the forging’s strength if its succeeding service temperature falls below  1100ºF or 595ºC.

Heat treatments may be adjusted by the Inconel 718 Forging Manufacturer in order to give the alloy its required properties or in order to enhance its properties. For the best combination of increased tensile strength and stress rupture properties, the following complex cycle is recommended by most Astm B637 Uns N07718 Inconel 718 Forging Manufacturer :

The alloy must be heated for 1 hr at a temperature ranging between  1750 ºF to 1800ºF, followed by air cooling. Then the alloy is alternately heated for 8 hrs at a temperature of 1325ºF and cooled at 100ºF/hr to 1150ºF (620ºC). This temperature is held for 8 hrs and subsequently it is followed by which the alloy is air cool.

For the best room temperature and cryogenic tensile properties in the Ams 5662 Specification alloy , the following technique or cycle is practised . The Astm B637 Uns N07718 Inconel 718 Forging Manufacturer will heat the alloy for 1 or 2 hrs at about 1950ºF and followed by air cooling. After this the alloy is held by heating for 8 hrs at a temperature of around 1325ºF. Once this is done, the material is then cooled at  temperatures ranging between 100ºF/hr to 1150ºF, for a duration of 8 hrs and finally air cooled.

While machining the alloy in an age-hardened condition will yield a better surface finish, machining the Inconel 718 alloy in an annealed condition will yield a longer tool life. The Ams 5662 Specification alloy can be welded in both, i.e. either the aged or annealed condition. A point to be noted is that welding an age-hardened alloy will result in the formation of a softened heat-affected zone.

This specification covers a corrosion and heat resistant nickel alloy in the form of bars, forgings, flash welded rings, and stock for forging flash welded rings or heading.

These products have been used typically for parts requiring high resistance to creep and stress-rupture up to 1300 degrees F (704 degrees C) and oxidation resistance up to 1800 degrees F (982 degrees C), particularly those parts which are formed or welded and then precipitation heat treated to develop required properties, but usage is not limited to such applications.

igh strength Alloy 718 can be obtained via heat treatment to achieve the required properties. AMS 5662 is in the solution annealed condition, usually with a capability test to ensure future compliance to AMS 5663. It is the softest of the Alloy 718 ‘states’ which can sometimes offer a machining benefit to our customers.

Alloy 718 (AMS 5663) is bar that is already aged (precipitation hardened). As supplied, this material provides high tensile strength and hardness compared to 718 in the annealed condition. Machining aged 718 is generally more difficult than machining annealed material.  The benefit is that once machining is completed the part is complete. Avoiding post machining heat treatment has several benefits since it eliminates the issue of dimensional change during aging. It also provides significant logistical advantages.
