The en 14399-4 bolt are high strength structural nut and bolt assemblies for preloading. Preloaded nut and bolt assemblies tend to be very sensitive to differences in both manufacture as well as lubrication. Therefore, it is important that the fastener assembly is supplied by a single manufacturer who will be responsible for the functioning of the assembly.

For the same reason, i.e. to maintain a specific, yet standardized delivery of the en 14399-4 hex bolt it is important that the coating of the fastener assembly be under the control or supervision of the same manufacturer, who produces these fasteners. Besides having similar mechanical properties, the components must have the same or similar functionality of the assembly. This functional properties of the assembly requires a specific set of preload which could be achieved only if the assembly is tightened using a suitable procedure.
The en 14399 4 bolt standard is constructed from a Property class 10.9 grade steel. Grade 10.9 metric bolts are generally manufactured using either medium carbon steel alloy, medium carbon steel or low carbon boron steel. These steel grades have been processed by both quenching as well as tempering. Two of the most important characteristics exhibited by the 10.9 grade steel bolts are its good wear resistance and high tensile strength. To be specific, the tensile strength of 10.9 grade steel bolts is around 1040 MPa while the yield strength of these bolts is about 940 MPa. It is precisely due to these reasons that the en 14399 4 bolt standard are used in applications involving the automotive industry and they are also used for bolting large and forged parts
The thread diameter of the EN 14399-4 Bolts ranges between M12 to M36. Suppliers often deliver these assemblies with the surface treatment being either Hot Dip Galvanized or plain, without any coating. Depending on the requirements of the end use, the buyer can always contact the supplier with regards to the surface finishing or coating.
Characteristics of the en 14399-4 hv bolts include -
- Large under-head surface of the bolts, which reduces the surface pressure and setting
- Large under-head radius of the bolts with an improved fatigue strength as well as a smaller notching effect
- Defined friction properties which enables the preloading of these assemblies
- Batch Marking on the product as required by the buyer in order to clear the inspection report or certificate.
- Last but not least the CE mark or Conformité Européenne. The CE marking is a certification mark which indicates that the product sold by either the manufacturers or supplier confirms to the health, safety, and environmental protection standards within the European Economic Area. In this case these assemblies need to be harmonized according to the European standard EN 14399-1.
